Whether you've just found a hardwood floor under your old carpeting or the wood floor you installed is looking a little beat, refinishing is the best option to bring out it's inner beauty. Here are the steps you need to take to refinish your floors on your own.

Clear the Area

You need to remove everything you can from the floor area you are going to refinish. Sofas, curtains, tables, rugs, etc. Another, often overlooked, important thing is to block as much of the airflow through the area as possible. While your finish is drying any airboe particles will stick and become part of the floor. Anything left in the area or those surrounding it should be properly protected while sanding. Dust covers and plastic blocking doorways are two of the best ways to accomplish this.

Before Sanding

You want to go over your floor and fill in any cracks or gaps in the wood. Use wood putty in visible areas and caulk along the baseline if necessary. If your floor was beneath carpeting, use diagonal pliers to remove any left over staples or remaining carpet padding. Then go around and sink any nails that may be sticking out as these can damage the sanding equipment.

Floor Sanding

You need to wear a dust mask and ear protection, sanding your floor might the noisiest, dustiest thing you ever do! You want to start your sander above the floor and gently lower it down. Be careful not to gouge your floor, it isn't hard to do. Just remember to be gentle and let the sander sort of float along the surface of the wood. Also make sure you never let the sander sit in one place on your floor, it will leave a swirl mark in seconds that will take you hours to remove.

Sand with the grain of the wood. Move forward and backward over each row so you get a nice even sanding. The first pass is your rough pass, now you need to change to a medium grit paper and go over the entire area a second time. Then go over the floor again looking for cracks, gaps and nails. Use putty and sink any nail heads you see.

Now you want to use a palm sander with a fine grit paper for your final sanding pass. Once finished, vacuum the whole area including the walls and ceiling. You need to remove all particles, dust, and anything else that can stick in the you wood finish. Now it's time to buff. Follow the grain in the wood and start in the middle of the room. After that your wood floor is ready to be stained, that's it.

Most people are unfamiliar with how to care for copper sinks. As one of the largest manufacturers and distributors of copper sinks throughout the US, I thought a simple article on how to care for your copper sink might be beneficial. Copper is extremely easy to care for and it naturally resists germs and bacteria.

Copper Care and Maintenance

Cleaning-Use only soap and water. DO not use Brasso* or other copper cleaners, they will remove the natural patina.

Maintenance-Wax your copper sink with a good quality auto wax at least twice a year (Spring and Fall). Apply wax, allow to haze and buff till removed. (* Our sink come prewaxed, so it is not necessary to wax after installation). Please note that you can always apply additional applications of wax, this provides an additional layer of protection.

Polishing-If needed, use a good fuiture oil (Old English, ect) or Olive oil to bring out a brilliant shine on the copper sink. I personally recommend Olive oil; it will enrich the color of the patina over time.

Designing A Professional Porch Railings

If you plan to install a professional looking porch railings for the first time you want to ensure you do it right the first time. This requires among other things proper design and proper planning.Properly designed railings require multiple parts including finials, balusters, posts and rails for the top and bottom of the structure. You can find most of this equipment at a lumberyard, online or at your local home improvement supply store. Many prefer to find supplies and equipment online. Proper planning merely requires that you measure out your porch space ahead of time and ensure you have a supply of equipment ready to go for installation.

Key Features Of Professional Looking Porch Railings
Professional looking porch railings share many features in common. Most professionally designed railings include decorative details to give the home a classic or cozy looking exterior.Woodwork comes in a variety of designs lending to a more finished and professional looking railing.

Other important components of a professionally designed porch railing include proper installation. To install your trim properly you will need finishing nails, a drill, wood files, possibly a saw and if you plan to paint, the appropriate exterior paint and color. You should be sure you measure the space you have available for your railing exactly before installing. This will help minimize error.

Installation Tips

Most porch railings are easily installed within two to four hours depending on the size and length of the railings. Here are some tips you can adopt to make installation go quickly and efficiently:

  • Always wear safety goggles when installing rails to avoid injury when sawing or cutting.
  • Take your time measuring the space you have available including the space you have between nailing points and the total surface area available on your porch. You should also measure the opening you have available where you plan to install posts.
  • Cut filler strips you have to the exact length youll need.Cut from the top and not the bottom.
  • Mark the balusters positions on strips after you cut them.

Dont forget you can get most railings custom made to accommodate any size or style of home you have.Handcrafted railings often look professional on Victorian style homes, while traditional wooden posts and railings look better on mode or contemporary style homes. Dont forget to weatherproof wooden structures to keep porch railings looking great year in and year out!

Research & Development

I began designing audio and video interconnect cables in 1988. I was asked to develop custom interconnects for discriminating audio and videophiles, who wanted to see and hear the quality of their components and the source material without added personality from their interconnects. The cables I constructed were created to solve two specific problems in interconnect design. Prior to this point these problems had not been addressed in the ever-changing field of high-end audio/video. The first was the subtle size difference of the RCA connectors used in the manufacture of mid-fi and high-end components. The second was the inherent loss of information through long runs of cable. It was also important that the interconnects allow our clients the freedom to combine components regardless of the type of connectors utilized by the various manufacturers. The custom cables had to carry information without signal loss and not be limited to short runs. The custom cables had to be extremely flexible and durable to adapt for custom installations. Most importantly they had to maintain state of the art quality while remaining cost effective.

End Connectors
Each connector must tolerate the extreme heat generated by the melting of silver solder at the point of termination. The connector used should be chosen for its compatibility with the wire. Proper strain relief is also a crucial factor in interconnect design. It is important that the wire and connector have a seamless integration. Every pair should be matched and tested for continuity and fit. The connection should then be insulated with heatshrink, to protect against contamination and to create a more durable termination. In a quality interconnect, all of these processes are done by hand, one cable at a time. This combination of quality parts and craftsmanship is essential to the manufacture of a superior interconnect.
Low Capacitance
Research indicates that Low Capacitance is the most relevant aspect of design for Analog or Digital Audio and Video Interconnect Cables. Capacitance is determined by the number and thickness of the center conductors in relationship to the outside shield. The material and thickness of the dielectric insulation also determines capacitance. Low Capacitance custom cable provides the best imaging and sound staging in analog audio and digital audio as well as the most accurate contrast and definition in video. This is especially true where long cable runs are required.
Over the years, speaker wire manufacturers have shown the importance of heavy gauge wire between the amplifier and the speakers to reduce resistance in the signal path. This notion of "The Heavier The Better" has erroneously been passed on to purchasers of interconnect cables for their components. When dealing with low millivolt signals from component to component, Low Capacitance (measured in picofarads) is the most relevant specification in cutting signal loss. It is not necessary for interconnect cables to be bulky and hard to use. In fact, Low Capacitance Interconnects are rarely heavy gauge and can be very flexible. Flexibility enables a cable to be angled to whatever configuration necessary, without affecting the integrity of the design.
A cable should be selected for its purity, flexibility, durability, capacitance and individual specifications for its designated application.

Double glazing reduces heat loss through your windows. You can save money on your heating bills. However, it will be a long time before you save enough money equal to the cost of the windows. If you can't afford to replace *all* your windows, choose the rooms that cost you the most money to heat.

Double glazed windows come in a variety of sizes and styles. Check for any planning restrictions on your house due to age and location. Sometimes planning permission may be required, in the case in listed buildings and conservation areas. Also if you are converting a flat window into a bay window. Check this with the local authority.

Don't rely on the Yellow Pages or advertisements to choose a supplier. Anyone can place an advert, join a trade body, or display badges they're not entitled to.

Always use a reputable company that you have had independently checked out. Don't rely on the fact that you have heard of them as even some of the biggest advertisers may have had several incaations. It's very easy in Britain to shut down one company and open up again under a similar name.

A 10% deposit is normal. A larger one is appropriate only if the work is 'bespoke' - such as unique timber window designs. Try to pay in stages according as the work in completed, and withhold the final payment until the work is completed to your satisfaction. Do not go for the cheapest quotation. There's a price point below which you'll be buying rubbish. Do not try to beat the price down too much. Less professional suppliers will agree to it, but sell you short later. Get the best you can afford. Ask your supplier how long the delivery will be. Have this stipulated on your contract. Additionally ask for an estimate of how long the work will take to finish once they are on-site.

Always pay deposits by credit card, as this will afford you some level of protection under the Consumer Credit Act. If the company will accept credit cards for the whole job then that's even better. You have 30 days to make a claim with your credit-card company. You have to show how you were given bad goods or workmanship i.e. they contracted to give you X and gave you Y instead.

Check, double check and get independent advice on the contract before you sign, as some contracts are considerably more onerous than others.

The best way to avoid salesmen's traps is to be sure of what you want before the salesman arrives. Present him with your requirements and use that as your bargaining chip. Get a specific quote against a specific set of requirements. Then you can be certain of getting like-for-like quotations. Ask if your chosen double glazing installer is a member of the Glass and Glazing Federation, check for FENSA accreditation and make sure that all products carry the safety standard kite mark.

Company checks to carry out:

How long have they been in business?

Check with Companies House.

What guarantees do they offer?

Are they insurance backed, lifetime or limited, are they transferable?

Membership of independent or paid for trading organisations.

These could include:

G.G.F. - Glass and Glazing Federation

B.P.F. - British Plastics Federation.

F.M.B. - Federation of Master Builders

Conservatory Council

Conservatory Association

Consumer Protection Association

Guild of Master Craftsman

E.B.C. - European Builders Confederation

Quality standards:

BS5750

B.B.A. certification

Public liability insurance.

Will the fitters and the company be covered if something should go wrong? You should look for at least 2 million pounds cover and check the certification covers the people who are actually doing the work.

Product standards to check out:

B.S.I. - British standards (kitemarks), for locking, security, safety, product, glass etc.

B.B.A. - British board of Agrement

FENSA - Document L of the building regulations.

You should make up a comparison checklist and confirm all claims independently of any sales claim or literature. The *good* contractors get work by word-of-mouth referrals from previous clients. They've plenty of work to keep them going, and so are worth waiting a few months for.

The bad ones are doing too many jobs at once, moving workers from site to site, don't supervise them properly, and thus do poor work.

Ask yourself: Have I been given:

1. Full and honest information.

2. Samples

3. Installations locally to look at

4. Recommendations.

5. The small print

6. Acceptable levels of deposits and payment terms

7. Full drawings and specification (if you don't have them prepared first).

8. Time to think!

There was a time when kitchens were a merely place to cook food and wash dishes. However, things are rapidly changing and the kitchens are breaking the clichs of the past times and becoming the hub of mode homes. The seams where the kitchen and the rest of the house were separated are fast diminishing. Therefore, it makes sense that if you are getting your house remodeled, you think of kitchen remodel as well.

An up-to-date, multi purpose kitchen that serves as central place for the family to spend time together, is a perfect idea for kitchen remodel. Do remember to consider the kitchen triangle when you hire contractors for kitchen remodel. The triangle so arranges the kitchen floor plan that the cooking space, water source and the storage space such as refrigerator lie in a triangle so that each of these utilities is easily accessible. This enhances the effectiveness of you kitchen floor plan.

The versatile mode kitchen, equipped with all the gadgetries to assist the homemaker in having the best and effortless time in the kitchen. Thus, your kitchen remodel plan should include ample space and effective utilization of that space to ensure that you get the best out of your mode kitchen.

If you do not wish to spend too much at one go on the kitchen remodel you can simply consider getting the kitchen painted and perhaps replacing the floor and countertops.

How to Collect Physical Mold Growth Samples for Low-Cost Mold Laboratory Identification of Mold Species

VANCOUVER, CANADA. Many property owners, apartment landlords, renters, employers, and employees want to know, and need to know, the precise identities of the various mold species infesting their moldy house, rental unit, or place of employment, according to Phillip Fry, Certified Mold Inspector and author of the book Do-It-Best-Yourself Mold Prevention, Inspection, Testing, & Remediation.

The accurate identification of mold species requires two steps: (1) physical collection of mold samples from the moldy building; and (2) mold laboratory analysis of the collected mold samples.

The least costly way to collect mold samples is the do-it-yourself approach carried out by gathering actual samples of mold growth to submit for mold laboratory analysis ($20.00 or more fee per sample analyzed).

Bulk Physical Mold Sampling

If a property owner or occupant sees mold growing on a wall, ceiling, floor, heating or cooling duct register, or any other surface, he can scrape mold particles off the mold growth area into a small ziplock bag. Collecting such a physical sample is bulk mold sampling or physical mold sampling.

During such scraping of the mold growth, the tester needs to wear rubber gloves and a full-face respirator mask with organic vapor filters (such as the 3M brand from a large hardware, home improvement, or safety store).

To do the scraping, use a new or thoroughly disinfected (with ethyl or rubbing alcohol) paint scraper. Disinfect the scraper after each individual sampling to remove any possible mold contaminants, and thus avoid mold cross-contamination in the sampling process from one source or location to another.

Print clearly and neatly on a large pressure sensitive label the property owners name, the property address, the precise test location at that address, the testing date, and the type of sampling method (bulk sample), along with the testers name and contact information.

The label should also include each individual test number, as listed on the mold chain of custody form, available free from the mold laboratory. Attach the label to the ziplock bag containing that respective, numbered mold sample.

Alteatively, the tester can scrape the mold particles directly into a mold test kit (Petri dish) to start the growing (culturing) of the mold sample. This viable testing growth process takes 5 to 7 days for accuracy in mold species identification.

The tester can then either watch the test kits for mold growth, or send the mold test kit to the mold lab immediately, or after the self-observation growth period.

Another bulk physical sampling technique is to cut out a small section (no larger than 2 inches by 2 inches) of a building material or home fuishing that contains significant mold growth. Then, put that cut piece into a small ziplock bag, or press firmly the moldy side down into a mold test kit. Follow the same labeling instructions explained above.

Examples of moldy materials from which bulk samples can be cut for mold lab analysis are wood timbers, drywall, plasterboard, wallpaper, ceiling tile, carpeting, padding, heating/cooling system filters, clothing, fuiture upholstery, and any other favorite mold food.

Scotch Brand Tape Lift Sampling

The easy steps involved in tape lift sampling to collect physical bulk mold samples are---

1. Cut a three-inch (3) long strip of one-inch (1) wide, transparent sticky tape, such as Scotch Brand Tape.

2. While wearing rubber gloves and a breathing respirator mask (with organic vapor filters) from the local hardware or home improvement store, press the tape strip firmly (sticky side down) onto the visible mold growth or onto the surface being tested.

3. Remove (peel back) the tape from the surface.

4. Open up a small ziplock bag (a transparent, easily sealable plastic storage bag), and press lightly the lift tape sample sticky side onto the inside sidewall of the ziplock bag.

5. Close [zip shut] the ziplock bag completely. Tape it shut if necessary to make sure no airboe mold spores can escape.

6. Attach to the outside of the ziplock bag a large adhesive label with the same types of sample identification information specified above, except that the type of sampling method is lift tape sampling.

Hot tubs have become more and more popular nowadays as a great way to unwind and relax at home, and more and more people are installing hot tubs in their homes. Not only can you enjoy soaking in the hot tub, you can also gain some great health benefits. You can soak your trouble and stress away as the hot water helps relieve the tension in your aching body. You can also do simple water exercise or water aerobics in your hot tub, which is a safe and effective way of exercising and staying in shape.

Hot tubs are generally made from cedar, redwood and teak, and can accommodate as little as one and up to more than ten people. When making your purchase, make sure to buy your hot tub from a reputable hot tub manufacturer. As long as the hot tub manufacturer has a good track record is the best guarantee of quality and service.

There is a wide range of hot tub models for you to choose from, such as the portable hot tub or home spa, You will be faced with a diverse array of hot tub features, designs, specifications and accessories so it is a good idea to arm yourself with some basic knowledge on hot tubs before you decide on your model preference. The inteet is a great place to search for useful information on hot tubs and the different hot tub models available on the market. Cost is an important consideration too when you decide to buy a hot tub, which depends on the construction, size and features of the spa you select. You should also find out the operating cost of the hot tub.

Once you have installed your hot tub at home, make sure to maintain it in good working condition as it is not a cheap investment. Most hot tubs should come with a hot tub cover as this is an essential and useful hot tub accessory to have. Hot tub covers help to keep litter and impurities out of the water. A hot tub without a cover may also be hazardous as younger children or pets may accidentally fall into the hot water. Hot tub covers also help retain heat in the hot tub, thereby lowering your heating bills.

It is important that you purchase a good quality hot tub cover. Make sure that your hot tub cover is sturdy and durable so that it can be used for many years to come. Also check that your hot tub cover is the right size and fits securely over your hot tub. Having a hot tub cover that fixes securely also helps in keeping impurities and litter out of the hot tub, and also traps the heat helping keep the water nice and hot.

After prolonged use, your hot tub cover may become waterlogged and ineffective. When this happens, the cover cannot insulate the heat very well. In that situation, it may be time to get a new cover. Understand that a hot tub cover can also become wo and wrinkled where it has been folded and unfolded once too many times. A wrinkle in your hot tub cover may also allow more heat to escape, so that it is no longer effective as insulation.

If you are looking into buying a Hot Tub, visit Susan's site at hot-tubs-depot.info and jacuzzi-whirlpool.info. Susan also enjoys writing on a wide range of topics at education-and-reference-hub.info.

With the growing trend in restoring to use those fireplaces that have been bricked or boarded up, it is important that these restored fireplaces and chimneys are working efficiently. For wood or coal buing fires to bu well, a good supply of air is required along with a chimney to expel the hot exhaust gases and smoke. Also the fuel should be held in a grate clear of the hearth floor allowing full circulation of the air and waste ash to fall through, so as not to stifle the fire. If the chimney or flue is inadequate or the flow of air insufficient, the fire will not function effectively.

In his thesis on the principles of fireplace design published in1799, Count Rumford emphasized the importance of the size of the flue compared with the size of the fireplace opening. He recommended that the cross-sectional area of the flue should be about a tenth of the size of the opening. However, fireplaces tended to be smaller after the mid nineteenth century. Mode flue liner manufacturers favor a ratio of one to seven, and there are sizing charts published that give details of current standards.

If your fire smokes or wont bu properly, see if opening a window improves matters. If it does, you need better ventilation in the room. One solution is to install a window vent, although this may cause a troublesome cross draft. A much more efficient form of ventilation is either a single ducted vent set into the floor in front of the fireplace, or twin ducted vents set into the floor or exteal walls on each side of the chimney breast.

When wood and coal are bued, flammable gases, tarry substances, acids and dust are given off. However, because domestic stoves are relatively inefficient not all of these substances are consumed. Instead, they rise up the chimney and some of them condense on the inside of the flue. Unbued carbon combines with these tars and acids creating soot; which builds up over a period of time thus reducing the size of the flue. It is important to have regularly used chimneys swept at least twice a year, ideally before, during and at the end of the heating season and the local trade directories contain details of fully qualified and suitably insured sweeps. A soot laden flue is a fire hazard, since the unbued elements of the soot can ignite, causing a chimney fire which can reach high temperatures and damage the chimney.

If a flue is too large, its size can be reduced to improve its efficiency by the fitting of a liner. A variety of methods and materials are used, including flue liners made of flexible stainless steel, ceramic, lightweight concrete sections, or concrete cast in situ. Other ways of reducing the fireplace opening in order to improve fire efficiency is to raise the level of the hearth or to fit a baffle across the top of the opening. If raising the hearth level or adding a baffle are not practical or unsightly then it may be worth asking a fireplace specialist whether fitting a metal smoke hood or canopy in the opening is the best solution.

The installation of your new hardwood floor is probably the most rewarding remodeling you can do. The floor usually sets a feeling and tone of a room whether as a dominant feature or a neutral setting. The floor adds on a beautiful appearance to a room and its comfort too. Yet above all, the flooring must be practical, durable and fit in with your daily living.

How to choose a wood floor color that's right for you

Color choices for your hardwood floor are a very important step. In selecting your color, don't stay with the first one that catches your eye because you probably will find another color you never even thought of. Here are some tips to help you through this process. Look at the color and not the name. Great fancy names can really influence you - more than you would like to admit. Trust instinct, which comes from inside you and greatly reflects a certain color preference. Take a few days to make your final decision on the color. Your hardwood floors are worth it. Break it down to three or four colors and take the sample home. If you are creating a complete dcor, make sure you compare all the wood samples with paint samples of all your new colors and any upholstery or wall coverings you may have. Check your colors at different times of the day, as light changes throughout the day. Put the samples on the floor and move them around the room to get a good idea of how the color will look.

Designing your hardwood floor theme like a pro

Designing informal and formal theme or any design depends on the utilization of the elements of design. A strong formal look is created with squares, stripes, or lines. A border stenciled on a wood plank floor will look cozy. Curved and floral pattes have the ability to soften colors or maybe even unify your floor space. Your curved pattes also give a sense of motion. You can also change your perception in a room. For example, by extending a linear patte lengthways in a room, you will give the appearance of the room being longer. If you put the same patte across the room, the feeling is wider and shorter.

Daryl Plaza is the owner of woodfloorresource.com a informative website revealing valuable resources/reviews to help you achieve a beautiful hardwood floor.

Laminate flooring has been very popular in Europe for quite some time. Now it is emerging in the United States as one of the most popularly used wood coverings for floors. The cause for its popularity can be attributed to the fact that it provides the hardwood look. Though it looks grand, hardwood flooring is expensive too. So, people often settle for laminate floors to get that effect at a lower price.

Moreover, laminate flooring is very durable. It can be suitably used in a variety of places - from a simple home bedroom to a showroom of automobiles. Laminate floors can be made upon just about any flat surface - be it plywood or concrete slab or hardwood flooring or sheet vinyl flooring.

Laminate floors are constructed of different layers. From the top downward as constructed, these layers are: the wear layer, the patte or image layer, medium/high density fiber board (a processed wood core), and the balancing layer with a moisture barrier.

It may be noted that laminate is also widely used in kitchen work surfaces. However, the difference between laminate on floors and laminate on kitchen work surfaces lies in the capacity to take stress of people walking on them everyday.

A wide range of colors and pattes are available for laminate floors. The quality of these floors is also improving day by day. Laminate floors have become close imitations of real wood floors.

The dense laminate floors are not difficult to clean. They require the simplest maintenance - dust sweeping or vacuum cleaning or maybe light mopping is required. Even with minimum effort the floors look good for many, many years. A 10- to 25-year residential warranty is also often provided against staining, wearing and fading.

Laminate Floors provides detailed information on Discount Laminate Floors, Hardwood Laminate Floors, How To Clean Laminate Floors, How To Install Laminate Floors and more. Laminate Floors is affiliated with How To Install Laminate Flooring.

Stainless steel cleaners and polish are divided into three categories. These three categories are stainless steel cleaners, stainless steel polishes and stainless steel polish cleaners. Each type of stainless steel maintenance product is used for a specific stainless steel maintenance task. There are also different types of commercial and residential stainless steel types. The main two types of stainless steel are satin stainless steel and polished stainless steel. Satin stainless steel has a duller finish than polished stainless steel but resists oil markings such as fingerprints much better. Polished stainless steel has a mirror like metal gloss look.

Stainless steel cleaners are used to cut through oil marks and dry, streak and shine free. Stainless steel cleaners are sometimes referred to as stainless steel maintainers and are meant to clean your stainless steel before applying a polish. Maintainers are also perfect for removing grease buildup from stoves, and cooking ranges. Stainless steel cleaners are often used in residential and commercial kitchens. Types of products stainless steel cleaners can be used on are dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, escalators, tile and chrome. Some stainless steel cleaners come with scents built in to leave a long lasting, pleasant aroma.

Stainless steel polish is used to give your stainless steel a wet gloss look shine. Stainless steel polish also protects your stainless steal as well as making it look great. Fingerprints are usually the biggest headache when using stainless steel products, stainless steel polish creates a thin barrier between the stainless steel and fingertips preventing markings. If you are constantly having to dust off your stainless fuiture or appliances stainless steel polish can actually help repel dust. If you are using polish in a food service are make sure to check that the stainless steel product you are using contains no chlorinated solvents which contaminate food.

Stainless steel polish and cleaner blended together is a quick way to clean your stainless steel products. Polish and cleaner combos will remove fingerprints and dust and leave a shine on any type of stainless steel. Stainless steel polish and cleaner does however require more elbow grease than using the separate cleaner polish method but it is usually quicker to use and is great for touch ups.

When purchasing stainless steel cleaners and polish be sure to find out the type of nozzle that is fitted to the can. The two main types of stainless cleaner can nozzles are oval and round hollow. An oval nozzle is generally better when you have smaller areas to clean and polish.

Kitchen remodeling is one of the most desirable home improvement projects for many homeowners. A new kitchen increases the value of your home and makes your life easier. The first step to your new kitchen is to set a budget. Decide how much money you are willing to spend. This will help drive your other decisions. Be sure to leave a cushion in your budget for additional, unexpected expenses.

When determining your budget, consider how long you intend to stay in your home. If you are planning to sell in the next year or so, you may want to spend less money. Decide which features you must have in your new kitchen. You can cut coers in other areas by substituting less expensive materials for the counter tops, flooring or cabinet doors.

Research Kitchen Trends

Before you start planning your remodeling project, do some research on the current trends and designs being used in kitchens. Look for information on the inteet or in home decorating magazines. Visit your local home improvement center for more ideas. Start a file for pictures of kitchens you love, fuiture, appliances, fabric swatches or anything else you find interesting. This will help when you are ready to start purchasing items for your new room.

Options in Kitchen Remodeling

Cabinets are an expensive item in any remodeling project. They often take up half of the overall budget for the room. If you can't afford the cost of brand new cabinets, there are cheaper alteatives. Consider cabinet refacing rather than replacing the entire cabinet. In refacing, the doors are replaced and exterior wood areas are covered. This is much less expensive since you are using the same cabinets. An even cheaper alteative is to paint your existing cabinets and buy new hardware.

If you must have new cabinets, consider adding some extra features. Features such as tilt out drawers, pull out garbage cans or a lazy Susan inside a coer cabinet are great space savers and make the room more functional. The doors can be either solid wood, clear glass or stained glass. Shop around to find out what is available before making a purchase.

You can save money on flooring and countertops as well. Substitute vinyl flooring in place of more expensive ceramic tile to save money. If you can install ceramic tiles yourself, you can have them for about the price you would pay a contractor to install vinyl flooring.

Countertops vary widely in price depending on the material that is used. Counters that are more durable are also more expensive. You may want this if you want to be able to cut food directly on the counter. For most people, this is an easy way to cut the overall cost of your kitchen. You can find less expensive material that gives the look of marble, butcher's block or other expensive materials.

Once you have decided what you want, consider how much of the job you can do yourself. Contractors can eat up a large portion of your budget. The more you can do, the more you will save in the overall cost of the room. Use the savings for great new fuiture.

We know how difficult and frustrating it can be to find an experienced, qualified contractor or tradesmen/women! I am sure most of you have heard many horror stories from friends and family and most of them have probably been true! But it doesn't have to be that way. While its not easy to find a competent, ethical, do-right contractor to work on your home or business, it CAN be done so read on for some practical advice!

Real world information is very hard to find when you are starting your search. Newspapers and and magazine articles mean well but none of them are able to provide you with real testimonials and experiences of previous customers who worked with any particular contractor.

We have put together a quick checklist for you below:

GET REFERRALS!

The best way to start is through friends and family. However, these referrals need to be qualified and checked as well. For example, your friend might have used a great contractor for her garage addition but may have no idea whether the company is also experienced in kitchen cabinets and tile replacement. You need to find out whether the referred company is also experienced in the specific job you are interesting in getting done.

Hardware stores and material manufacturers are also a good resource. But once again, make sure you check references and portfolios.

Engineers, architects and other contractors in similar industries are also an excellent resource. Once again, check all references and experience regardless of how good the referral sounds.

Spend some time and research each candidate. Check with the search engines for anything you may find. And most important of all, trust your instincts.

PREPARE BUDGETS AND SPECIFICATIONS

If you are serious about finding a good contractor, it will be important for you to be realistic about your budget and the work you can afford to complete.

Any professional contractor and tradesperson will appreciate the fact that you have prepared your specifications in advance and will be more responsive as a result. He/she will also be able to quickly determine if you can afford what you want, will help determine how much of what you want is possible with your budget and youll have the assurance that everyone youre interviewing is pricing the same job. Many times, contractors seem unreliable or unresponsive because customers do not seem serious about the work they need done or have no idea how much things will really cost. Do your homework in advance and you will get a much better response.

CHECK REFERENCES!

We CANNOT stress enough how important this step is!! Before you give your final word and sign on the dotted line, make sure you follow these steps:

1. Make sure your contractor is INSURED for both Workers Compensation and General Liability. Dont take the contractors word or accept a copy of an insurance binder from the contractor. The only secure way is to get the name of the contractors insurance carrier, look the number up in the phone book yourself, then call and ask for a Certificate of Insurance. The carrier will be happy to send you one in the mail.

2. Check the contractor's professional associations. For example, contractors who are members of NARI (The National Association of the Remodeling Industry) are usually the type who take pride in their professional credentials.

3. Find out how long the contractor has been in business. Many small businesses go out of business in less than a year. Make sure your contractor doesn't run out of capital on your job.

4. Call the company's bank and find out whether their account has been handled responsibly.

5. Find out how long the contractor has been working with his crew? A long-time crew is a sign that your contractor treats his workers well and that there should be no revolving door on your project. You want to avoid the "leaing curve" new employees bring to a project in progress as much as possible.

6. Find out what will be handled by the contractor's staff and what will be subcontracted? Get names of the subcontractors and call them. Ask if the contractor pays on time? How reliable is he? Also ask for the names of suppliers and check out the contractor with them.

7. Find out how many other projects the contractor will be working on simultaneously if you choose to hire him/her. Will the contractor be able to devote the time you need to your project?

8. Ask the contractor to provide you with references of projects similar to yours and call them up.D id the job stay within budget and on schedule? Was the site kept clean? Did the contractor pay his bills? Would you work with this contractor again? Ask if you can visit to see the results of the project.

And finally, just like anything, go with your gut feeling. For more info on how to find a good contractors, come back for the second part of this article where we will discuss how to negotiate a good contract before beginning the work!

Good luck and happy building and remodeling.

1. Shutters have proper louver tension

The shutters louvers should be smooth and stay in the desired position throughout the lifetime of the shutter. Some manufacturers feature tension screws on the side of each shutter panel, with one tension screw required for each louver section. The problem with tension screws occurs over time, when tightening the screws becomes necessary on a regular basis. Eventually, the louvers within a single shutter unit will not have uniform tension because the louver sections adapt to the tension screw differently. Polywood, vinyl, fauxwood, and synthetic shutters usually have an extremely tight louver tension. It is then difficult to put the louvers exactly in the desired location, and the rotation of the louvers is difficult. The best technique for providing uniform tension that will remain constant is a split nylon pin tension system that requires no maintenance.

2. Shutters are built from a quality material

Wood is the most preferable material for building shutters, and not all woods are made alike. Basswood is a superior wood because it is among the straightest of hardwoods with a fine uniform texture and indistinct grain. It can be sanded and stained to a smooth finish, and it is lightweight yet very strong.

3. Shutters are purchased from reliable company

You should research the company from which you plan to purchase your shutters. They need to be a reputable, knowledgeable, support oriented, and accessible. We recommend you test their knowledge by asking questions. Check out their credibility with an organization such as the Better Business Bureau, and check to see if they have a list of customer comments or references. The company needs to be prepared to communicate all of the necessary information to you about purchasing interior shutters. They need to have a staff that is experienced and available for technical questions. It is frustrating when the only knowledgeable person is always "in the field."

4. Shutters are mortised for hinges

Mortised hinges are important to achieve a tight fit within your window opening. Without a mortised panel, a gap appears on the hanging side that allows light to break between the shutter panel and the window jamb. It should not be necessary to mortise the window jamb.

5. Shutters are rabbeted stiles between panels

Rabbeted stiles between shutter panels reduces light breaks between panels. A significant gap is created in between panels that are simply butted up against one another.

6. View a shutter sample

The shutter company should be able to supply you with a finished sample shutter. This way you can view the quality of construction and finish first-hand. It is beneficial for you also to hold the shutter in the window to visualize how the shutters will attach and look in your house.

7. Shutters should have quality finish

A quality paint or stain finish is essential to the overall satisfaction with your shutter purchase. A paint finish should be smooth, thick, and complete. You should be unable to feel the wood grain and it should show through the paint. A stain finish should be even with a proper top protective coat.

8. Custom built for each individual window

There are no standard windows. A proper custom shutter unit needs to be built for each individual window opening to the 1/16 inch. Any more will result in possible unnecessary gaps in the shutter unit. Do not assume that because two or more windows look the same, that they are the same. Many times proper measuring will show that each window is unique.

Jacuzzi is a brand name of a water pump system used in bathtubs. When people refer to a Jacuzzi, it also means a hot tub or a spa. The terms can be used interchangeably.

When shopping for a Jacuzzi or a hot tub, there are several things to keep in mind. First, where are you going to put it? A Jacuzzi needs a room with plenty of circulation. The warm water needs ventilation to circulate in the room or to the outdoors to keep drywall from mildew or rot.

A Jacuzzi also needs plenty of weight support to hold all of the water. Putting a Jacuzzi on the second floor is not a good idea, unless it is a small bathtub Jacuzzi. A basement hot tub is not a good idea either since the cement block walls can hinder ventilation and cause added moisture problems.

A cement slab or patio is an ideal place for a Jacuzzi hot tub. To use year-round, a gazebo or small room can be built around it. Windows can be made to open or remove to allow for ventilation, or to cool off on hot summer nights.

Second, what size do you need? Do you plan on hosting lots of parties and entertaining? You may want to consider a 6-8 person Jacuzzi. If it is for you and a significant other, a two seater may be perfect.

Jacuzzi's come in a variety of sizes, and they also come in a wide selection of shapes. Jacuzzi's can be round, square, oval, kidney shaped or made into a custom design. Jacuzzi's can be made into a shape to fit a unique room size or to curve around a wall or architecture style.

A Jacuzzi can be made from many different materials. There are inflatable hot tubs, which can be filled with air or let out and moved. This offers flexibility if you live in a cold climate, you can bring it inside for winter months and enjoy.

High resin plastics and wood also make up the exterior of Jacuzzi's and hot tubs. When buying wood products, make sure it is specially treated to resist water and damage caused by heat.

The interior of a Jacuzzi is almost always a type of plastic. What determines the price is how many jets are inside and how many settings they have. Settings can be limited with high and low, but more advanced with multiple choices for water speed and angle.

Jacuzzi's require similar care to that of an outdoor pool. Water levels must be checked regularly and tested for bacteria. To keep bacteria and other agents away, a variety of chemicals are available to treat the water. The representative where you buy your Jacuzzi from will have instructions and can offer guidance until you are used to the process.

Besides the initial expense of purchasing the Jacuzzi, there are monthly expenses for maintaining your hot tub. Those expenses would be for electricity to keep the water warm, chemicals to keep the ph levels safe and water to keep it full!

Options to go with your hot tub are unlimited. Floating tiki bars, drink holders, pillows and toys for the kids are just a few fun things available. Special seat cushions can be made to help with special back problems or ailments.

Covers should be on the Jacuzzi when not in use. It keeps any excess dirt and dust out of the water and jets. It may keep wandering children out of the water too. If you have children, special infrared and laser security alarms can be made to go off if the light has been broken. Keep safety a top priority if you have a Jacuzzi in your home.

Are you excited about a kitchen remodeling project? Or, are you simply trying to find out if you can afford one in the first place? The kitchen is the center of your home. When you create your kitchen, it is important to make it a comfortable and good quality working environment.

Before dreaming big takes over, you need to find your budget. This may not be the fun part of remodeling the kitchen but it will keep you in line when you get out there to begin looking at materials and appliances. Will you be able to remodel the entire kitchen or will you just purchase specific elements? What fits within your budget?

Once you have an established budget, you can begin designing your kitchen. Many people choose to use a designer to help with this. If you would like to do this, you can find many people who are willing to help. In fact, many of your large home improvement stores offer this service as well as providing the needed materials. If you would like to do the designing, by all means you can and should!

You will find that in the beginning it can be boring taking the measurements and looking at different materials. But, when it begins to come together it will become fun. Here are some things that you will want to think about:

* Wall coverings, painting, wallpaper, tile

* Flooring

* Appliance, replacing or keeping the old

* Cabinetry

* Countertops

* Lighting and ventilation

* Windows and window treatment

* Accessories

When designing a kitchen, you can change any or all of these features. The way they work together is completely up to you. Look for color pattes and appliances with the same texture and color as well. Some choose stainless steal while others enjoy fabulous colors.

Popco ceilings are made up mainly of chalk, clay and an aggregate. To remove it you have to wet it, which tus it into a soft gooey mess. Its not going to be an easy project, but with a little preparation you can control the mess.

Start by removing anything possible from the room. Protect the floor and anything that had to stay in the room with a thick sheet of plastic. Lay out some old newspaper on the floor on top of the plastic to soak most of the wet mess up.

A note of caution if your popco ceiling is from the early 70s it may contain asbestos. If you suspect your ceiling may be from that era, remove a small piece of the popco ceiling and send it in for testing. If it does contain asbestos, it will have to be removed by professionals who can also dispose of it properly to reduce the cancer risk asbestos can pose for you and your family.

Wear some old clothes, a hat to keep the goop out of your hair, and protective eyewear. A respirator of some sort or at least a mask to keep most of the dust particles out of your lungs is a good idea as well.

Use a spray bottle and completely saturate part of the ceiling. Let it soak in for a few minutes and then use a scrapper tool to scrape the gooey mess of your ceiling. A drywall-finishing knife works well. Hold a bucket under the tool to catch most of the removed popco ceiling. Work in small section and keep repeating the process until the popco ceiling is removed. Use a wet sponge to wipe off any remaining residue on the ceiling.

You may have to rewet some parts of the ceiling to get the popco to soften up enough to remove it. Try not to wet it more than 2 to 3 times. You dont want the drywall beneath to get too saturated with water. It may warp or grow mold.

Once the entire popco ceiling is removed, let the ceiling dry completely. Now its time to sand the entire surface to remove any rough patches. A pole sander works great for this. Give the dust a chance to settle and then use a joint compound to patch any wholes, cracks etc that may have formed on the ceiling. Let the compound dry for about an hour, then lightly sand over it to smooth it out.

Once you get the mess on the floor cleaned up your new smooth ceiling is ready to be painted.

It takes a long time to sell a kitchen
After 2 hours in your home the designer of your new kitchen by this stage will have finished the vast majority of his presentation. Hell have made sure already that youre more than happy with your chosen door, the qualitys what youre looking for in a new kitchen and you wouldnt change anything about the design. Its now time for the price presentation. This will be an experienced kitchen designers favourite part of the visit. But before he tells you the price, he has a very important set of procedures to follow...

Calculating how much he can drop the price
First of all, after completing the design whilst sat away from the customer, the designer will calculate the sale price. Hell then calculate how far he can reduce the price in order to hit his lesser eaing bands. Then the designer will then decide upon a 'reason' for dropping the price.

Hitting your hot spot
During the visit you will have had many discussions with the designer about your ideal kitchen. You may have expressed a desire to have a double integrated oven or an integrated washer if I could afford it. Unknowingly, youve just given the designer a great reason (a 'hot spot') to encourage you to go-ahead on the night. Hes just about to give you the reason-to-buy.

Presenting the price 'correctly'
Its now time for the designers showpiece. He makes sure that if youre a couple, youre both sitting down. This is conducive to the right atmosphere. The designer will then begin to list everything he has included in the new kitchen design. Hell say, This is the final price. I wont do any rubbish like giving you the full retail price, then dropping the price in half. Thats sales rubbish. So the price here is the final price youll pay. Now this includes us taking out and getting rid of your old kitchen, your new fuiture, your new oven, hob, extractor, integrated dishwasher, all the plumbing, electrical and joinery work as well as your 10-year comprehensive guarantee. Now obviously youve said this is your dream kitchen, so you know from whats in there and the quality of everything that its not going to be the cheapest one in the world.

Guess the price
Youre now feeling very nervous. Youre not sure now if you even want to hear the price. The designer has now just done as much as he possibly can to make sure you think that you wont be able to afford the kitchen at all. Its a classic sales technique to take something away before its offered back to you again on a plate. The designer then says, Go on guess! Just before I tell you the price I want to see how much you think its worth. Ive got it written down on this bit of paper so obviously Im not going to change it!

There are many ways that an experienced kitchen designer can get you to guess the price. However its done he will get you to guess. From him thats imperative.

Get a commitment to buy
If the kitchen designers done his job properly, then youll guess that the kitchen is worth more than the sale price. If you do guess more than this price then the designer will ask you one more simple question before he presents the actual figure to you

So if I could do it for that price would you buy it?

If you say maybe, he knows that hes got you. He then presents the price. Its just more than what you wanted to pay. You go I do like it, but its slightly more than I wanted to pay. The designer then says, Im sorry that I couldnt quite get it in your budget, but Ive got everything you wanted in it. After another few minutes of consideration, the designer then says, Well theres one other optionI didnt really want to tell you because you said that you wouldnt consider making a decision today. Weve actually been given some integrated dishwashers as a gift from a supplier after we gave them a big order if I could manage to include the dishwasher for free would you consider going ahead today?

What do you do now? You have to decide. If its presented correctly though, most people believe its a genuine offer.

Steve Smith worked as a professional kitchen designer for over two years. In his time working in the kitchen industry, he designed over 1000 kitchens, selling nearly 400. Latterly he became disillusioned with the 'hard sales techniques' being employed by many companies in the industry and has since developed an online Kitchen Design Guide.

There are just a few important things to know and to remember, when building an energy-efficient home. These are; insulation, air intrusion, thermal mass, and that windows and holes in the wall of the house lose about the same amount of energy.

Insulation is a means of capturing dead air and causing it to slow the exchange of hot energy toward a cold space. Most builders use fiberglass insulation. Personally, I prefer to use blown cellulose insulation. In America, we major the value of insulation, by giving it an R-factor. The R-factor of insulation is a reference for the ability of the insulation to slow heat transfer and to the R stands for resistance factor. The R-factor is only part of the story. Insulation can have a high R factor, but if air moves through it is almost useless. One of the things we do recently, in home construction, is to use Tyvek, a thin, breathable plastic membrane that stops the wind. In mode construction; we customarily have from the outside killing in; siding, Tyvek, insulation, and drywall. Customarily this results in what we call and R-30 wall.

In other countries they talk about a U-factor. The U stands for use factor. And this use factor is merely a combination of an R factor, and an ability to withstand air intrusion. Therefore, the use factor is actually more useful than strictly the R factor. For instance, a concrete wall, has a low R factor and a high U factor if the logs are made to fit tightly together. A concrete home has a low resistance factor, because concrete transmits thermal energy easily. To properly insulate a concrete wall, one should insulate the outside of the wall. And this brings us to thermal mass.Windows are a great energy waster. Each pane of glass has a resistance factor of less than one. A thermopane window has a resistance factor of about two or three including the airspace. The more windows a home has the more expensive it is to heat. Triple pane windows have a resistance factor of about five. A drapery fully covering a window will increase the resistance factor to about 20. Therefore drawn draperies will greatly increase the insulating ability of a home.

Thermal mass is simply the amount of weight that reaches a certain temperature and wants to stay at that temperature. For instance, I home with a brick floor, and lots of books and heavy fuiture, has a lots of thermal mass. Once a home with lots of thermal mass reaches a comfortable temperature it tends to stay that temperature for a long time, even after they heat or air-conditioning stops. Offices tend to have high thermal mass. It takes a lot of energy to change the temperature of thermal mass. Thus, one should leave the thermostat at the same temperature and not move it up and down. Tuing down the thermostat at night and tuing it back up during the day wastes energy.

Are you looking for that picture perfect floor to make your new living room look great? Laminate floors are an ever more popular and affordable choice for homeowners that want a floor that looks great and stands up to the kind of abuse an active family can dish out. Over the past two decades, advances in manufacturing technology have brought laminate flooring out of the realms of cheap alteative. Todays laminates are versatile, durable and virtually indistinguishable from the real thing.

The real thing that laminate floors duplicate is most often hardwood flooring, but the manufacturing process for laminates allows for endless possibilities of pattes and materials. Because the actual patte of the floor is an image embedded beneath a crystal clear protective coating, laminate flooring can look like oak or cherry, fine terracotta or ceramic, or even marble or flagstone. With the development of high-tech imaging processes and materials, laminate floors are rapidly becoming known as the best choice of flooring for any active family.

Four Layer Construction Stability, Versatility, Durability and Beauty The secret of the durability and beauty of laminate floors lies in the manufacturing processes and materials used for creating them. A sheet of laminate floor consists of four layers that are bonded together using a combination of pressure and heat. Each layer serves a specific purpose in the construction.

Layer 1: The Back Layer
Laminate floors are designed to be laid over an existing floor without being attached to it. The back layer of a laminate floor is usually made of melamine, a tough, waterproof acrylic that helps protect the core layer of the floor from moisture damage. This means that laminate flooring can be used in areas that arent recommended for wood and other types of floors that cant stand up to damage.

Layer 2: The Inner Core
Between the back layer and the decorative layer is a resilient fiberboard core. The material thats used for the core varies slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer. The fiberboard is pressed together to create a dense, resilient center that gives laminate flooring the spring that distinguishes it from hardwood or stone floors. The fiberboard is subjected to either pressure or a combination of pressure and heat to give it added strength.

Layer 3: The Decorative Layer
This is the layer that gives laminate floors their well-deserved reputation as great pretenders. Its a highly detailed photograph of the natural surface desired that is bonded to the inner core. The most popular surface is wood, as wood grains render beautifully in photographs, but more and more often, the photo is of stone or tile. The patte or design that may be used is limited only by the floor designers imagination. Four or five years back, youd have had to look hard to find anything but wood but these days youll find dozens of other styles available that mimic the look of anything from Grecian marble to fieldstone to terracotta tile.

The Wear Layer
The top layer of a laminate floor is called the wear layer for obvious reasons. In high end products, aluminum oxide is the most commonly used top surface. Similar to the laminated top of a counter like Formica, the laminate layer used by most floor manufacturers is up to 40% stronger than countertop laminates. It may be up to several milliliters thick, and it resists staining, moisture, bus, fading nearly any abuse you can give it. The wear layer is what protects the floor, keeping it looking brand new for years.

Putting It All Together
The design layer is fused to the inner core first, either using heat and pressure, or just pressure. The fused layers are then bonded to the melamine backing the same way. The wear layer goes on last, before the laminate flooring material goes through a final fusing. The material is cut into planks or blocks which is what the end user will buy at the store. The planks may range from less than an inch in width to almost a foot, and are edged with tongue and groove construction so that the pieces of a floor can be fitted together just like a puzzle piece. Many manufacturers extend the protective coating to the sides of the flooring planks as well as the top and bottom.

Putting It All Together Again
The tongue and groove construction makes installation so easy that a complete novice can put down a new floor in a weekend afteoon. Some of the newer laminate floor products dont even require glue to get a virtually seamless floor. They just snap together and lock tight, making it possible to walk on your new floor as soon as you put it down. Picture perfect, years of wear and easy to install the new generation of laminate floors are definitely worth a second look when youre looking for a new floor.

My name is Jason Ashby and i have 21 years experiance in the flooring trade. First starting out as a flooring installer then progressing into training people in all aspects of flooring. I also run an online UK store selling Quick-Step laminate flooring products. Marble differs from most other stones because it is extremely porous. In other words, it allows dirt and stains to set in and be retained far more easily than denser stone. Also for this reason, it cannot withstand most conventional cleaning mediums especially harsh detergents and acids.

Remember that marble has a slightly unstable chemistry and is quite delicate. Calcium carbonate (which is what marble basically consists of) will immediately and dramatically react with any kind of acid, resulting in pitting and scarring.

The best way of maintaining marbles overall cleanliness is with lukewarm water, a soft cloth and an occasional wipe down with a mild, non-abrasive detergent. The marble should be thoroughly wiped dry after such cleaning. If you like, a light coat of wax can be applied for further protection, but this is entirely optional, since marble will not gain additional luster from wax the way wood does.

The only safe way of tackling stains (blood, tea, coffee etc.) on marble is by gently soaking them off. To do this, any kind of absorbent material such as blotting paper or facial tissue can be lightly soaked in water and 20% hydrogen peroxide, placed over the stain and left there for several hours. The stain should wipe off easily after this treatment. Rust stains are best removed with regular rust removers; however, marble should not be exposed to them longer than strictly necessary.

Marble does tend to fade with the passage of time. This does not necessarily detract from its innate beauty. However, the luster of faded marble especially on domestic home floors can be effectively rejuvenated. There are specialty cleaning agents such as tin dioxide available at most leading housekeeping stores. Used as manual polish or in combination with an electric floor polisher, these work wonders in freshening up the lost shine of marble.

The first question is, what is a conservatory?

There is no standard definition of what constitutes a conservatory (apart from "greenhouse"). This is one reason why quotes vary so widely.

The conservatory industry itself does not have a consistent approach. So, the only way out of this is to be specific about your requirements. *Don't be afraid to ask questions if the sales rep or designer's comments don't make sense*.

If you want it to last and keep looking good, buy the best one in the most expensive material your budget allows. The cheapest supplier rarely supplies the best product or the best service. Do not try to beat the price down too much. Less professional suppliers will agree to it, but sell you short later. Get the best you can afford. Allow 10% for 'extras' or additions you may make later to the order.

A 10% deposit is normal. A larger one is appropriate only if the work is 'bespoke'. Try to pay in stages according as the work in completed, and withhold the final payment until the work is completed to your satisfaction.

Inform your insurance company; your home policy may need amending.

Contact your local planning office early in the design process. You need planning permission for a conservatory.

Check out different designs on the inteet. Send off for brochures. Make your conservatory as big as your budget or actual floor space will allow. Stake out the dimensions of the conservatory on the ground with pegs.

Decide if you want a conservatory with glass full height or one with dwarf walls.

Consider your neighbours; will the conservatory affect their enjoyment of their sunlight, their garden? You can avoid legal action!

When you build a conservatory in the UK it should ideally face towards the south and should not be overshadowed.

Materials: Aluminium is strong, with a small risk of condensation when humidity is high. Hardwoods look good but can be difficult and expensive to mantain. Double-glazed, white uPVC is inexpensive, popular, heat conserving, easy to maintain and long-lasting.

Suppliers: Don't rely on the Yellow Pages or advertisements as proof of proficiency. Anyone can place an advert, join a trade body, or display badges they're not entitled to. Always use a reputable company that you have had independently checked out.

Don't rely on the fact that you have heard of them, as even some of the biggest advertisers may have had several incaations. It's very easy in Britain to shut down one company and open up again under a similar name. Always pay deposits by credit card, as this will afford you some level of protection under the Consumer Credit Act. If the company will accept credit cards for the whole job then that is even better. You have 30 days to make a claim with your credit-card company. You have to show how you were given bad goods or workmanship i.e. they contracted to give you X and gave you Y instead.

Also ask them how long the delivery will be. Have this stated in the contract. Additionally ask for an estimate of how long the work will take to finish once they are on-site.

Check, double check and get independent advice on the contract before you sign, as some contracts are considerably more onerous than others.

The best way to avoid salesmen's traps is to be sure of what you want before the salesman arrives in order to present him with your requirements and use that as your bargaining chip.

Getting a specific quote against a specific set of requirements is the only way you can be certain of getting like for like quotations and getting the best prices to compare at your leisure.

Home improvement projects often scare people away. The typical homeowner will believe that it will cost thousands of dollars to remodel one room since they often lack the skills to do the job themselves. They may also feel that the project is too expensive since many materials and tools are needed.

To the contrary, home improvement does not have to be expensive at all. Of course if you hire a contractor or subcontractor to do the job, you will pay a fortune but if you have the patience and the ability to read and follow directions then you can remodel an entire room in your home for less than one hundred dollars. Of course this will depend on the type of remodeling you want to accomplish and your definition of remodeling. If you believe painting a room is considered remodeling then your costs will be inexpensive. If you want to expand a room or redesign it then your costs will rise. So to help you save money, you will need to decide the type of remodeling then you will need to contrast and compare materials.

Before starting the process of improving your home, you will need to setup a budget and a plan to get started. You will need to consider various notions when considering and planning home improvement. For example, do you intend to paint your home? Do you intend to tile your home? Do you want carpet and/or hard wood in your home? How many rooms do you plan to remodel? What material will you need? How much material will you need?

Asking questions is part of analyzing and planning for home improvement. One of the best tools to have when considering home improvement is knowing what you like and knowing what you want. When I improve my home, the first thing I want to do is to roam around my brain to search for my favorites and what excites and appeals to me. Thus, when I go to the home improvement stores I already have in mind what I am going to purchase, thus this relaxes my quest to improving my home.

If you are lacking the cash to improve your home then setting up a budget will help you get what you want as well as save you cash. You may even consider purchasing materials and tools for home improvement at the stores that offer discounts and/or purchases with no payments until a particular date. This notion will give you time to get your home improved while saving the cash to payoff the improvement materials and tools. If you have more then one hardware or lumber store, then look for the best possible deals. Sometimes if you purchase at a local hardware store instead of a large brand name, you may be able to work out a nice deal.

Unfortunately, many people go for secondary home loans, i.e. home equity loans, to improve their home. Getting loans from lenders often lead to debt, and secondary home loans for improvement only leads to paying off your home twice. Thus, avoid those high interest rates and loan payments and lea to budget to improve your home. It may take you longer to make those home improvements but it give you less stress and will help keep you out of debt.

Let me give you an overall view of what one room could cost you for repairs. Say you want to paint a room in your home. You will need plaster, sealers, primer, paints, paint thinners, scrapers, screwdriver, paint opening (often comes with your paint purchase), patches, paintbrushes, tray, and so forth. Now you may think this is going to cost you a fortune to improve your home, but to the contrary, you are wrong.

The paint and tools will cost you the most while the other items will cost less. Primer, sealers and plaster could cost around fifteen dollars if you go to the right store.

Paint thinners, trays, brushes and screwdriver will cost around fifteen if you visit the right store. Thus, the patches should be purchased with a plaster kit, which will save you a few pennies. The paint will cost around twenty per can, depending on the type of paint purchased. Therefore, for around a hundred bucks you could remodel a room in your home without hiring anyone to do the job providing you follow the instructions.

What about the bathroom? Can you remodel the area on a budget plan? It will depend on the size of the area an the type of remodeling but if you wish to tile your bathroom and paint the walls you could get the job done for around a hundred bucks give or take a few dollars. If you visit the right stores and know what you are doing, you could remodel a small bathroom or medium bathroom for around fifty bucks.

Leaing to budget and plan can help you remodel your entire home (if the home is in good standings) for a few hundred dollars. Furthermore, doing the work yourself will save you thousands of dollars.

Ink Stains on Leather

One of the biggest nightmares on expensive leather fuiture, shoes or jackets is ink stains. In fact this is one of the most common leather care questions asked on the inteet.

One of the most common questions is: "how do I remove ink stains from my leather fuiture?"

While quality leather creams will help prevent such stains from being so readily absorbed, what do you do if it's already too late?

The following summary has been compiled from users all over the world. They will help you clean ink stains off of leather goods, especially tan leather or white leather.

Important Note: Always test leather care products or cleaning products on an inconspicuous area such as the back of the chair, the inside arch of the shoe etc. Not all leather is the same.

ALCOHOL

Using isopropyl alcohol ("rubbing alcohol") or denatured alcohol you can remove most ink stains. This type of alcohol is available from most pharmacies and grocery stores. Put it on a soft cloth and rub or dab the area gently and let it dry. Test first on an area that will not be seen to ensure the leather finish will not be affected. Follow up with a natural leather conditioner if the leather looks or feels dry.

ANTIBACTERIAL GEL

Rub a small amount into the stain. Let is sit for a few minutes and then rub it off. This method has been used successfully to remove ink stains from tan leather couches.

BABY WIPES

You may find this particularly useful in cleaning car leather interiors. The cleaning ingredients help dissolve the stains, the wipes are non-abrasive and they also add some conditioning to the leather.

WINDEX

A number of people have successfully used Windex to remove ink stains from their leather. We recommend trying the other methods first, but this method has been used successfully to remove black dye from a beige leather couch and a cream leather sofa. Spray on the windex and rub gently with a soft scrubbing brush. Rinse well and then finish up with a quality leather conditioner.

Keep in mind that any of the above methods will usually rob your leather goods of much needed moisture. After cleaning the stain you should use a good quality leather cream to condition the leather and help protect against future damage.

Finding storage shelving for the home is no easy task. If getting organized is at the top of your list this year, there are several options that are more than able to help you put all of your stuff where it needs to go.

Adding shelving storage to your home doesnt have to be tricky or expensive. And, when you add it tastefully, storage solutions for the office are also available. Getting organized starts with providing a way to organize.

To help you, here are some storage shelving solutions that you can incorporate into your home or office.

Up There? Wondering how high on the walls you can add shelves? One of the biggest problems that individuals have with adding shelving units to their homes is finding a way to put them up and still have a nice looking unit.

You should not add shelves that are higher than you can easily reach. They will look out of the place as well. And, they should be installed straight, as a slight dip will show against the wall.

Hang It There. Another option that works well is to hang a storage organizer. You can use these in closets in virtually any size and shape.

There are those that are excellent for storing shoes while others are perfect for storing clothing. Still, in the office setting, this is a great place to store files and paperwork. Most can be custom made for your size needs.

Depth Counts Too. When adding shelves to an area that will be needed to store a lot of things, consider adding a little extra depth to the shelves.

This way, you can place neat storage containers on the shelves to hide all of the clutter yet keeping it organized at the same time. Make sure that if you put up deeper shelves, that the walls can support them and that you anchor them properly.

One of the best ways to get a great amount of shelving space that is stylish are wall storage units that span the entire wall. Unlike traditional book shelves, these are units of different sizes and shapes that fit from the ceiling to the floor and offer a see thru look to them.

The dimensions can be varied and custom ordering them may be necessary, but this is a great way to get a good amount of storage from an entire wall while keeping the area looking stylish.

Finding storage shelving solutions for your home means that youll need to invest a little time in throwing away the junk and cleaning up.

And, it means taking accurate measurements as well. When you do add them to your home or office, you will love the feeling of knowing where everything is and youll welcome guests in without worrying about the clutter.

Installing a custom ceramic tile shower in your home is something a do it yourself homeowner can do with a little upfront knowledge. The most important aspect of a successful custom ceramic tile shower installation is properly installing a shower pan membrane liner. The shower pan membrane liner is used to ensure a leak-proof shower.

Shower pan membrane liners are used to funnel any water that seeps through the floor or wall grout to the shower drain below. The shower pan membrane liner is made up of a flexible type of plastic material that sits below a bed of mortar, and the tile, in the shower floor area.

Prior to installing the shower pan membrane liner, the floor of the shower needs to be pre-sloped to ensure that the water will flow towards the shower drain assembly. The pre-slope is accomplished by applying a layer of mortar to the floor of the shower unit area. The layer of mortar is troweled in such as way as to create a gentle slope from the shower wall edges to the center of the shower where the drain resides.

Once the pre-slope mortar has cured, the flexible shower pan membrane liner can then be installed. There are a couple of types of shower pan membrane liners on the market, with each having their own benefits. With either type of membrane, the homeowner needs to form and fold the material into the base of the shower area and secure it to the sides of the shower wall frame with staples and/or nails. In addition, an opening in the membrane should be cut out to allow the adjustable shower drain assembly to slip through.

With the shower pan membrane installed, the cementitious ceramic tile backerboard can then be secured to the framed shower walls. The backerboard is a rigid material that is ideal for attaching tile in wet areas such as a shower stall.

After installing the ceramic tile backerboard, a final coat of mortar needs to be applied on top of the membrane to protect it and to provide a solid base for laying the ceramic floor tile.

With the final coat of mortar cured, the ceramic tile can then be installed in the shower.

Once the tile and grout have been installed, the shower drain assembly should be adjusted so that the drain height sits flush with the finished ceramic tile floor.

For more information on installing a shower pan membrane liner, see the Shower Pan Membrane Liner Installation EBook from HomeAdditionPlus.com. The Shower Pan Membrane Liner EBook will quickly teach you the step-by-step process for installing the shower pan membrane liner correctly. It includes instructions on framing the shower stall, pouring the pre-slope and shower base mortar, and installing the shower pan membrane liner.
