When you think about building your new home consider your needs and your lifestyle. If you are newlyweds your choices will be different from a couple who is ready to retire and is looking for a smaller home. The lot may affect the type of house and its placement.

Some other things that you will need to consider are whether or not there is bedrock under the soil. Bedrock and clays will make excavation for the foundation difficult.

Pay attention to the weather and your house. Will your windows be placed for maximum exposure to moing and evening sun? The sun and wind can affect heating and/or air conditioning costs depending in which direction the slope is facing. Check the surrounding rivers and streams as related to your lot. If they overflow, how will it affect your property?

If you live in the flood plains be sure to find out if you can get flood insurance. If not, you may want to reconsider the place where you will build your home. Check the site for ditches or drainage issues. Soil drainage can be another serious problem as it can cause water seepage into the foundation. This can cause structural issues such as cracks and holes in the foundation.

The type of soil could also affect the foundation. Some clay soils, shrink when dry and expand when wet. This could cause cracks and make it difficult to maintain a dry basement.

Finally, check your zoning laws to be sure the type of house you want to build is within their specifications. If expansion is permissible and how much you will actually be able to do. The zoning commission also goves the placement of your home on the site. You want to keep well within their regulations.

Look at lots on which to build your new home. Check out the landscaping. Does the soil allow for proper drainage? Will you be able to plant privacy hedges or put up a privacy fence? How and where does the sun hit the lot? If you want maximum light exposure you may want to place your house to get that. The type of house you want to build could affect where on the lot your house will sit. The size of the lot will affect the type of house that you will be put on it.

Also check out the neighborhood where you want to build your home, does the style you have chosen mesh with others in the area. Will the house fit on the lot? Will the soil support the foundation? Get organized. Keep any and all information about your plans, your lot, and anything regarding your home in one place. Always check with the zoning board regarding your plans. You have many decisions to make good luck!

Anyone who has ever left a few bananas sitting out or forgotten to change their garbage knows all too well the problem with fruit flies. It seems that once they've invaded your kitchen, you can't get rid of them. You can scrub, clean, remove tempting fruit and spray the garbage can with disinfectants, but they always come back. You can't help but cringe just looking at them.

We have always had problems with fruit flies, with one of the main reasons being that we live in an apartment and by law - must recycle. Because of where we live, we have to keep our recycling containers inside until they can be disposed of once a week. If the recyclables aren't cleaned well enough after being used, they make a perfect breeding ground for fruit flies. They love bits of rotting food remnants and seem to thrive in even the smallest amount. When fruit flies move in, they just don't want to leave and will lay eggs in and on anything they can find - fruits & vegetables left on the counter, sink drains, garbage disposals, empty bottles & cans, garbage bags, and even mops and rags.

A Few Fun Facts About Fruit Flies:

- Can lay up to 500 eggs at a time
- Their entire lifecycle is complete in about a week
- While considered mainly a pest, they have the potential to contaminate food with dangerous bacteria

We all know that removing the food, getting rid of the garbage & cleaning up plays a big role, but we also know what it's like to move a piece of fruit and have a swarm of fruit flies fill the air only to escape your attempts at killing them. Where are they gonna go? Obviously the ones flying around can't be easily captured or killed, so they'll linger about until they find some other place to lay eggs and the whole cycle starts again.

In all my attempts, I found the best way to capture and remove the ones that escape is to create a simple trap using a jar, plastic wrap and a piece of food. Here's how it works:

1. Get a small jar you don't plan on using again ( like a baby food jar or something similar ) and wash it out well. Make sure it is not a jar with a funky smell such as a used pickle jar or anything that use to have strong spices. You want a clean, odorless jar.

2. Take a chunk of banana and place inside the jar. This is why you want a clean, odorless jar - so that the banana smell won't be overpowered by other not-so-tempting smells. Banana seems to work the best, but you can experiment.

3. Fit a piece of plastic wrap over the top of the jar, making sure that it fits tight and well sealed around the edges. Then take a pen or pencil and poke 4 to 5 holes in the plastic, just big enough for a fruit fly to fit into. Once a fruit fly crawls in, it can't get out. You would think they would just fly back out through the holes, but they won't!

4. Place the jar in an area where you have seen the most fruit flies. Depending on the amount of fruit flies you have, you can expect to start seeing the jar fill up within just a few hours. After 24 hours, you will discover just how bad your fruit fly problem is!

This simple, inexpensive & safe method works perfectly and if you don't want the jar on public display, you can always slip it behind the garbage can, in the cupboard or even under the sink (Just don't forget about it!). You will want to empty the jar every 3-4 days before any eggs have a chance to hatch. While adult fruit flies can't easily escape through the holes, their maggots can very easily, and besides that - they are disgusting to see crawling around in the jar. You don't want to see these things crawling on your counter!

Cleaning out the jar shouldn't be a problem. If you have a kind heart, you can choose to let them go outside. Personally, I spray the little buggers with bug spray, wash out the jar and start the whole process over again if I think there are still some fruit flies left to capture.

For bad fruit fly problems, you will want to use this method for a good two weeks to make sure you've captured the majority of fruit flies. You might even want to use a few jars in different places. Before long, your kitchen will be back to normal.

The tie style dust mop attaches its self to the dust mop with two ties on each side. The ties are usually tied into a bow to secure to mop to the frame.

In a hot water (hydronic) heating systems, water is heated in a gas, oil, or electric boiler and circulated through pipes to convectors; older systems use radiators. When the thermostat calls for heat, a "circulator pump" in the boiler retu line moves water through the pipes to the convectors, which give up heat to the rooms. When the circulator is not pumping, a "flow-control valve" stops the water flow to protect the convectors from overheating.

Older gravity systems have no circulator pumps and depend on lighter, heated water rising in the pipes to the radiators; and cooler, heavier water gravitating back to the boiler.

Single-pipe systems, with short branch lines to each convector, are used in small to medium-sized houses. Two pipe systems use separate supply and retu pipes, and are more appropriate for larger houses, because cool retu water from convectors doesn't pass through others. This maintains a higher water temperature at far ends of the system.

As heated water expands, an air-tight "expansion tank" on the hot side of the boiler takes in the excess; and if the tank fills up, a "safety-relief valve" on top of the boiler relieves the pressure. If this valve leaks under normal operating pressure, you can open it (beware of hot spray) and close it. If the dripping continues, the relief valve needs to be replaced.

Twice a year, if the circulator pump and motor are not permanently lubricated, add a couple drops of oil. If you want to work on your boiler, shut off the power, let it cool down and then drain the system if necessary. Older tanks can be drained when they're too full, but newer "diaphragm tanks" should be drained only by qualified service personnel.

When first heating cold water in a hydronic system, it releases air which becomes trapped in the convectors, preventing hot water from entering. To release this air, most convectors are installed with air vents, which can be opened with a screwdriver until hot water squirts out.

Efficiency can be improved by insulating pipes, or by partially closing convector shut-off valves in rooms requiring less heat. Systems can be divided into zones with one or more rooms controlled by a thermostatic "zone valve". Alteatively, a separate circulator is sometimes used for each zone, or you could have thermostatic valves installed on each convector, but these options might be expensive.

Boilers are more expensive to install than other systems, but are generally trouble-free, very efficient, and last much longer than other types of heating systems.

* Some newer systems use non-metallic piping, installed in/under floors, to distribute hot water in the rooms to be heated. In some cases, a domestic oil or gas-fired hot water tank can be fitted with a circulating pump, and the hot water directed to convectors or a heating coil installed in a hot air plenum.

Solar panels are just now entering an exciting era of usability and practicality. Solar Panels are typically installed on the top of homes or businesses, but they can also be installed next to the structure if space permits. This is usually not a big deal if you live in the country where you have acres and acres of cheap land at your disposal. However, if you live in a populated city it usually makes more sense to install solar panels on the top of the building that needs power. It is important to install your solar panel so that it the sun hits the panels at the right angle.

Ideally the solar panel would be directly pointed at the sun at all times. In the past, tracking devices were not economically feasible, and they have not been used. Instead solar panels were installed in a fixed position that usually pointed to the south. You can now install a tracking system that actually continously rotates your solar panels throughout the day to keep your solar panels producing at maximum capacity. These systems are not cheap and they work best when they have room to rotate which is not always easy to do on top of your house. For this reason, tracking systems work best in remote locations where real estate is cheap. If you don't have this luxury, keep in mind that solar panels produce at full capacity when placed in direct sunlight. Fix your solar panels directly under the noon time sun. Remove all obstructions and trim branches that may be blocking sunlight to your solar panels. Many people do not take this consideration seriously, and they are greatly disapointed to find out that their solar panels don't put out the electrity that they claim they will. Well, the answer is simple, solar panels need to be in full sun without any exceptions. If you don't follow this simple rule, you're just not going to get enough out of your solar panels to justify the cost.

The only advantage that you may have on your side however is that your solar panels may last longer if they are not under the stress of full sun everyday. Solar panel mounts are now made specifically for the use of installing photovoltaic solar panels. Solar panel mounts come in several different forms. Some mounts work better on RVs, some solar panel mounts are designed to affix your panels to poles, on the top of your house, or next to your home. In any case, don't try to make your own mounts unless you have really researched this. Your solar panels are an expensive part of your home, and you don't want to come home someday to find thousands of dollars of solar panels destroyed in a wind storm. How to Choose the Right Wood for Your Deck Environmental Factors

There are two main environmental factors to consider when choosing a lumber species for your deck.

Firstly if you are seeking a softwood species, it will generally require treatment with a chemical preservative to provide the durability required for a long a service life. From time to time conces have been expressed about the potentially harmful nature of the products used, mainly the potential danger of the chemicals leaching out from the wood. Admittedly this is grey area with conflicting �evidence� being presented to back up claims one way or the other. One of the most common chemical preservatives used in the past has been CCA (copper-chrome�arsenic) and although such products have been used for decades, some countries or regions have now taken steps to ban the use of CCA, at least in public spaces.

In recent years a number of alteative wood preservation products have come on the market which are claimed to have little or no potential harmful consequences. However whether these products will provide the same long term protection of the timber as CCA, remains to be proven.

But the main environmental factor to be considered to is that of the destruction of forests and ensuring the any wood is sourced from forests which are managed responsibly on long term sustainable basis without affecting the surrounding environment and complying with all legal requirements of the country of origin. For all too long, tropical (and other) forests have been decimated to make quick, short term profits with devastating long term consequences. Uncontrolled or illegal logging of forests in the Amazon basin and in Sth East Asia have been of particular conce. Gradually however this situation is changing, although illegal logging is still rampant in many third world countries in particular.

In an attempt to ensure the responsible harvesting and sustainable forestry practices yet assure the ongoing viability of existing forest industries, various inteational organizations have been set up, the best known of which is probably the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This non profit organization aims to ensure responsible and sustainable management of forests and issues certificates of compliance for lumber or wood products that are harvested or produced from such forests. End products can also be certified by the FSC providing the entire chain from lumber harvesting through processing and production of finished products complies with the regulations and requirements of the FSC.

In recent years an increasing number of countries have set up their own standards and certification procedures. However in many cases the standards and procedures are nowhere near as strict as those of the FSC and to a large extent seem designed to give some quasi govement backed assurance that wood is being harvested responsibly and sustainably. Insulating Foundations

Even if your home seems to be tightly sealed and well-insulated, if you have a foundation that�s not insulated properly, you will experience a large loss of heat.

Foundation insulation can result in lower heating costs and may help avoid water vapor condensation problems.

Poor foundation installation can make below grade rooms very uncomfortable and can result in many problems, to much moisture, radon infiltration, and an influx of insects.

Foundation insulation is especially important if you have radiant heat system. This article will outline the various types of insulation available.

When insulating your basement you need to make sure you avoid moisture problems. Moisture can cause mold and can result in physical damage to you interior finished walls, as well as your carpeting. And mold can seriously affect your health.

For a newly constructed home, proper placed footing drainage and waterproofing should avoid most moisture problems. For an existing home, if your basement shows signs of moisture problems, these problems should be addressed immediately.

When insulation is installed on the dirt side of a basement wall it has a lot of advantages and some disadvantages also. On a positive note, it decreases what is called thermal bridging which cuts down on heat loss through the foundation. It also protects the foundation water proof coating from damage when backfilling, and acts as a vessel to protect against moisture.

In extreme climates, during freeze-thaw cycles it can also protect your home from unwanted water and reduces the possibility of condensation on basement surfaces.

Some disadvantages would be that it�s expensive when installed in an existing building and it may still be vulnerable to an insect infestation.

Many experts believe that the best way to keep your basement dry is to insulate the exterior of the foundation walls with a rigid insulation board and a water-proof coating under that board that covers the entire foundation, from the footing all the way up to just below where finished grade will be.

A perimeter drainage system needs to be carefully designed and consist of perforated plastic pipe, per washed gravel, along with a good quality filter fabric especially in areas with poor soil drainage. This will help in keeping the rock free from dirt allowing the water to filter down into the perforated pipe.

For an existing home, adding insulation to the interior of the foundation is probably a more cost effective alteative. Plus, there's a wide selection of materials available for almost every type of insulation.

If your foundation wall is masonry blocks, you can fill the cores of your blocks with high-pressured foam. This works far better than most of the other methods.

When insulating a Slab-on-grade the following ways should be done. You should insulate under the slab along with the edges of the slab, and between the footings and slab. This will reduce heat loss from both the foundation and the slab.

Remember that all exposed insulation needs to be protected from the elements in some way, whether using cement, metal, or some other kind of membrane.

For new construction insulation follow these guidelines: first comes about four inches of gravel and under-slab drainage and plumbing pipes, a layer of radiant barrier that is approved for concrete use, then one to two inches or rigid insulation, followed by two to three inches or sand, and lastly is the floor slab.

A floating floor is another alteative, which consists of � a finished wooden flooring (top), rosin paper and two layers of � inch plywood or OSB. Followed by a stiff foam board insulation.�This will be quite easy to install and isolate the floor from the earth below.

Regardless of the method you choose, by properly insulating your foundation you will make sure your radiant heat system runs efficiently and effectively for years to come.

When you disinfect your shower stalls and glass shower doors, you not only make the house look and smell better, but you kill germs that can potentially be unhealthy to your family. There are many viruses, such as athlete's foot and the virus that causes plantar's warts that can be spread from the shower floor. In addition, bacterial microbes can be trapped and grow in soap scum, so ridding your shower of this annoying menace is important, as well. In the interest of household cleanliness and health, you should use a cleaning product that disinfects and kills mold and mildew on the shower stall itself, along with a good scrub brush. Today's products have made the task much easier that they used to be, though, so that you can spend less time in there cleaning and more time in there washing your cares away.

More and more homeowners are experiencing the satisfaction of repairing their tile and grout. The high cost of labor for even small jobs, has driven people to the stores looking for tile, materials, products and information.

This is GREAT! Why shouldn�t homeowners lea to tile and grout?

I�ve seen many new homes with completed ceramic tile jobs that have made the hair on the back of my neck stand up in fright � especially tract homes where the bottom line for the developer is speed and coers to cut. So the more we lea about the different trades and the applications and techniques thereof, the better we will recognize a well performed and finished product to be proud of.

With this in mind, here are some grouting techniques to install in your memory banks for your next tile or stone job around the house.

Whether you have laid new tile or have scraped out the grout from an existing tiled area, make sure you clean the grout joints thoroughly and have taped off the areas you don�t want the grout to �spill over.� Wiping grout off of sealed cabinets and semi or glossy paints won�t hurt those materials if you use care when wiping, but sometimes a little labor invested in taping adjacent areas will make the job easier in the long run.

When the grout joints are clean and ready to fill; mix the powdered grout with clean water and according to the package specifications. The grout should be lump-free and a consistency that will not easily pour out of the bucket.

Use the appropriate grout for your application. A non-sanded grout should be used for grout joints that are 1/8� and smaller in widths, while sanded grouts are to be used in joints which are larger. Typically you�ll find the smaller grout joints with the non-sanded grout in the bathroom and shower areas.

Use some latex gloves to protect your hands and with a grout float held at a 30-45 degree angle, spread the grout firmly into the grout joints. Don�t worry about the mess on the tiles as this will clean up with your sponge at the proper time. Some areas that are hard to float, you can force the grout into the joint by hand. When all the joints are filled completely, scrape the excess grout off the tiles by holding the float at an almost 90 degree angle and pulling diagonally across the joints so you don�t remove grout from the joints. Put all the remaining grout back in the bucket.

Allow the grout to set for about 10 minutes then with a clean bucket of water and grout sponge, lightly wipe the tiles with a damp sponge, (not a dripping sponge). Always wipe with a clean side of the sponge, flip the sponge over and wipe another section, then rinse the sponge clean. The initial sponging wipes most of the unwanted grout from the surface. The second sponging smoothes and neatens the joints and the third cleans the haze or residue from the tile. Always allow a few minutes between the three sponging cycles as this will allow the grout time to properly set. Remember, you don�t want water from the sponge to puddle on the grout as this weakens and deforms the consistency.

Lastly, a final wipe will smooth any remaining high spots in the grout joints and clean the tiles of the remaining haze. After the grout dries, you can polish the tile with cheesecloth or a soft cotton cloth to remove any remaining residue. Nice Job!

Hot Water Boilers

A hot water boiler is an enclosed container that allows heat to be transmitted into water till the time it becomes heated water. The hot water is then effectively utilized for transferring the heat to where it is needed. A hot water boiler is filled with water, unlike the steam boiler.

However, like the steam boiler, hot water boilers have many add-ons to function effectively. The presence of aquastat serves a two-fold objective. It monitors the temperature in which the boiler runs, and offers a low-voltage transformer and relay to control the circulator.

A majority of commercial buildings, manufacturers and businesses employ hot water boilers. Water is heated to dispersing temperatures, characteristically 140-180�F, and generally put back about 20�F lower.

These structures are called "closed loop," with nominal fresh water make-up. Hot water boilers are favored since they generally do not call for operators or complex water chemistry. As they function at lower temperatures, hot water boilers can perform at greater fuel-conversion efficiencies than steam boilers.

Some of the characteristic features of a hot water boiler include low water fuel cutoff and a safety valve. Low water fuel cutoff dries up the supply of fuel to the buer during low water conditions in the boiler. The low water fuel cut ff is positioned 2" to 6" beneath the boiler water level.

Low water fuel discontinues operations using an electric probe or a float sensor. When the sensor displays a low water state, a contact to the main buer control circuit unlocks and blocks the fuel.

Low water fuel cutoffs should be checked regularly based on usage or necessities. If a low water condition is not correctly gauged there are chances for the boiler to overheat. Under these circumstances boilers are likely to be damaged for good. Safety valves are the most significant devices on a boiler. Laminate Flooring A Floor For All Seasons

Real wooden floors can bring warmth and comfort to a room, tuing ordinary dwellings into cozy cottages, gray office quarters into lounge-like spaces, and a house into a home. But with the current shortage of trees, and with forests disappearing all over the world, hardwoods will be harder and harder to come by.

There is a substitute, however, for hardwood floors. Laminates are sold as planks or panels, and are fashioned to look like wood, stone, or tile. These planks are made of thick, water-resistant material, and are shaped so that they fit together like snug, interlocking pieces. They are fitted through the floating installation method, where they rest on top of a subfloor, which may be made of plywood, concrete, or existing flooring.

Laminates can be made to look exactly like your hardwood of choice, be it mahogany, oak, or cherry. Because they aren�t made of real wood, they can withstand extreme impact, scratching, cigarette bus, and exposure to sunlight, all without fading or being heavily damaged. Not much is needed to maintain a laminate floor: all that laminates need are regular vacuuming, or a wipe-down with a damp mop or rag, and with no wax or polish at that.

Because laminates are stress resistant, they can be engineered for use most anywhere in the home, including wet areas such as the kitchen. They can also be built over heated concrete slabs � an advantage when laminates have to be fitted in countries with very cold climates. Laminates can be easily installed, and as they don�t need much cleaning or protection, need not be covered with carpets or rugs, which can carry dust mites or allergens. Thus, laminates are not only beautiful and cheap, they can contribute to healthy living as well.

Laminates, however, also carry their disadvantages. They can be scratched if heavy objects are dragged across them, or if large domestic animals � such as big dogs or cats � trudge or paw their way through them. They may be largely resistant to sun and scratches, but laminates might not be able to stand moisture. The laminate inner core is made up of a special strong material which is not especially resistant to excessive moisture. If moisture does seep into a laminate floor, the planks may be deformed, and may no longer be as scratch-proof and bu-ready as before.

Since laminates are installed above a subfloor, they can be noisy if walked on. As such, laminate manufacturers also provide special paddings to be installed in between the subfloor and laminate � not quite an advantage if you don�t want to spend more for a cheap, but nature-friendly hardwood finish.

Despite the fact that laminates are considerably cheaper than hardwood floors, and can be installed by most anybody who wants to fix their home up, any damage done to them is not easily fixed. Laminates are maintained through touch-up kits, or chip repair kits, but these kits are difficult to find, and are only designed to maintain the floor, not repair major damage.

Laminates have their goods and not-so-goods, but in the end, the decision all comes down to you. If you think you can install a floor on your own with minimal cost, and if you don�t have large animals for pets, then a laminate floor may be the best for your needs. However, if you aren�t quite sure what animals might come in the future, and if you are conceed about floorboards creaking, or getting misshapen from heat and moisture, then maybe cutting down a few trees won�t hurt.

Whatever the case, wherever you may be, laminates or not, hardwoods or floorboards, a house won�t be a home if the ground you walk on doesn�t appeal to your tastes.

Look at the space with �feng shui eyes�
When you are looking at a house � or any space for that matter � and considering whether to buy it, it helps to look at it with �feng shui eyes.�� You will want to do this once you have considered all the other objective aspects of the house, such as square footage, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, living areas, location, price, etc.�

The next step is to run down a checklist of the subjective feng shui considerations that will help you make a feng shui assessment. Even if you aren�t house hunting, this list can give you some important information that might be very revealing about the house you are already in!

The list below provides some of the more serious feng shui problems.

Exterior
Street:
Is house at the end of a cul-de-sac, dead end or T-junction?�
Topography.� Is the lot sloped away at the back?� Avoid yards that slope down toward the rear.� Select home with a rise at the rear.� Is house below street grade?� This will make for a constant �uphill� struggle while you live here.
Landscape.� Is there a tree or pole directly in front of the front door?� Dead trees or shrubs?� Dead lawn?�
Garage.� Is it ahead of the house or front door?�
Neighbors.� Is this house smaller than houses on either side? Do neighbors� houses have sharp angles pointing at this house or appear to overpower or dominate the house?
Views & proximity.� Can you see or is it close to church, temple or other house of worship?� Can you see or is it close to funeral home, cemetery, hospital, police station, sewage treatment, abandoned building or run-down house?
Water.� Is water, lake, river, ocean at the back of house or too close to front?�
Lot.� Regular or irregular-shaped? House sits too close to the front of lot? Does backyard fall away from the rear of the house?
Paths.� Driveway ends at house instead of garage?� Walkways end straight at door?

Interior
House style.� Split, bi-level, or center hall colonial?�
Front.� Front door lines up with back door?� Does front door face stairway?�

A ladder is a collective set of steps, linked vertically via two horizontal rods. These steps are called rungs and the rods supporting them are called stiles. A ladder is commonly used for climbing at home or at work. There are two types of ladders -- rigid or hard material ladders and rope ladders. Rigid ladders are generally portable, but are sometimes fixed permanently to buildings or structures.

Ladders come in variety of styles and heights. They can either be rented or purchased. Styles include stool, foldable and single length ladders. Each ladder has a defined weight that it can support and come in a choice of materials like aluminum, fiberglass, steel, wood and iron. Fiberglass ladders are the strongest and most durable. Although a bit heavier than aluminum, they do not present any risk while doing electrical work.

Rigid ladders serve a lot of purposes. They are used for attics, pools, docks, libraries, shops, etc. They are available in many styles. Besides the simple and straight fixed ladder, an extension ladder is also useful. It is divided into parts that are easily foldable or expandable to provide double the height. It is recommended that for best stability, this distance from the bottom of the ladder should be one quarter of the height of the ladder. It is a good practice to use ladder stabilizers. How to Make Freezer Blocking Work for You

Freezer blocking is a method that can save you money with your household freezer.

With the fall weather upon us this is the time when people are starting to put away the excess bounty of their garden. Vegetables that have not already been consumed need to be stored for use throughout the winter months.

Once you have bottled and/or packaged your vegetables they will have to be stored in a cold environment that is below their freezing point and at a low humidity level. A cold environment slows down the natural deterioration of vegetable matter that occurs. Most vegetables that are placed into a cold environment will go into a type of dormant state.

Obviously a cold storage room is the most economical method. It uses the winter temperatures to keep foods cold. Unfortunately its downside is that the temperature cannot be regulated. If the outside temperature changes so does the temperature inside the cold storage room. Also few mode homes have a cold storage room. It is considered unnecessary in today�s fast paced society.

For those without the basement cold storage room an alteative is the household freezer. Many people use a small chest freezer for this purpose. Chest freezers seem to be the answer for many gardeners. An upright freezer will also work but they are not as efficient (or as cold) as the chest variety. Also the small chest freezer is generally less expensive than an upright of the same size.

But if you invest in a freezer is it not economical to operate if only partially full. Freezer blocking is a possible answer for this problem.

Basically freezer blocking is filling up the unused space inside the freezer. The theory is � the less air inside the freezer the less electricity will be required to freeze the food. Anything that lowers the inteal volume of the freezer will cause the compressor to spend less time keeping the interior cold. It would be equivalent to having a smaller freezer.

To do this cardboard boxes called �blockers� are placed inside the freezer. These boxes are filled with insulation. Any form of insulation will work, but basic household wall insulation (fibreglass) is most commonly used. It is both inexpensive and easily obtained. An alteative are the insulating peanuts used for shipping and packaging. Others suggest filling the boxes with old newspapers. This would work but the insulation value would be far less than the fibreglass method. Also the newspaper would pick up moisture and become extremely heavy to lift.

Whatever is used the boxes should be completely filled, and then sealed and taped shut. You do not want insulation mixing openly with food products. Also boxes of varied sizes work best because they allow you to fill up the open spaces better.

If the freezer is only half full then place the boxes either at the bottom of the freezer or all to one side. This way you have easier access to the food during the winter. Placing the boxes on top will be frustrating because you will have to remove them every time you want to get to the food.

Another way of doing this would be to place blankets or sleeping bags inside the open areas of the freezer. The insulation method is usually preferred though because it is much easier to move around boxes than an old sleeping bag.

An alteative method is to add containers of water to the freezer�partially full containers � remember water expands about 10% when frozen.

This is not true freezer blocking. Rather it is a method called heat sinking. Containers of water added to the freezer will themselves freeze into blocks of ice. Every time the freezer shuts off the cold stored inside the ice blocks will help keep the food frozen. The ice should slow down the natural heat transfer between the freezer walls and the food. The colder the freezer interior the less the cold control will tu on the compressor.

Although heat sinking is good in theory I am not convinced this method really saves money.

In all of the above methods the overall affect (in theory) is to make the freezer operate less. So the less it operates the less electricity it will consume. How much can be saved by these methods has not been properly tested. The best estimate is that it could save you 5% to 15% per year.

But then, that�s a pretty good saving for an hour of your time, and some cardboard boxes full of insulation.
